What makes our sawmill unique? We aren’t just a sawmill we are a farm too and we are committed to regeneration of the land through innovative and sustainable farming practices
What tree species do we mill? Southern Bluegum, Cypress Macrocarpa, Silvertop Ash and Raditata Pine. Later in the year (2023) when the land drys out, we will have Iron bark and Sugar Gum
Where do the parts of the log that can’t be turned into structural timber go? We take a lot of care and time to use as much of the sawlogs. Our by products are firewood, kindling, wood chips, saw dust, tree stakes, garden and farm grade timber products.
DO WE SELL POSTS THAT CAN GO IN THE GROUND? Yes we have a few options. If aesthetics are important then hardwood posts with a Class 1 durability, embedded in concrete ( not touching soil) will last up to 20 to 30 years. Just be aware of termites, this can impact their longevity. Putting posts on stirrups allows you more timber species options. As well if you are keen to use cypress macrocarpa in the ground , 3 coats of bitumen paint can improve the life span up to approximately 15 to 20 years. We sell treated pine posts and they are the cheapest option, termite resistant and can last up to 25 years.
I WANT TO BUILD A VEGGIE GARDEN BED, WHAT TIMBER CAN I USE AND HOW LONG WILL IT LAST? The best choice is cypress macrocarpa and we have a few different grades depending on your budget. Premium landscape grade (minimum structural of grade F5) is the best choice with just a few knots, bark imperfections with minimal sapwood. Garden grade will have many bark inclusions, big knots, one surface with some sapwood and possibly a portion of the original rounded surface called waning may be present. Check out veryediblegardens.com.au they use our premium landscape grade to build their veggie beds.
WHAT IS SAPWOOD AND HOW WILL IT AFFECT THE DURABILITY OF THE TIMBER? Sapwood is full of starches that feed the growth of the tree. This can also make a tasty meal to insects especially the Lyctus Borer. Sapwood can affect the durability of the timber and can be the first point of rot. Correct use of timber can prevent this from occurring.
